Risbaf Factory Regeneration

The Isfahan Risbaf Spinning Factory is the only remaining factory among Isfahan’s spinning and fabric production factories that has remained almost unchanged. To develop a desirable idea and plan for the regeneration of the Risbaf factory, an attempt was made to analyze and examine the physical condition of the factory and Chaharbagh Street in various dimensions as a first step, aiming to achieve a correct understanding of the past and present condition of this complex. Appropriate strategies and solutions were then formulated. The analysis showed that over time, many gardens and dense plant cover along Chaharbagh Street have disappeared. Currently, the only area where extensive vegetation still exists and there is a possibility of reviving gardens is the Risbaf factory complex. Additionally, most of the current uses along Chaharbagh Street are dedicated to commercial and office spaces, leading to saturation and visual clutter. Therefore, it appears unnecessary to replicate commercial and office spaces in a similar manner along Chaharbagh Street. Instead, it would be preferable to focus on regeneration the Risbaf complex by emphasizing spaces and functions that are characteristic of Isfahan city and Chaharbagh street.

According to the analysis for the regeneration of the Risbaf factory complex, the formation of a stable multi-functional complex was considered. In fact, during the analysis performed and the review of existing priorities and potentials, components of sustainability were taken into consideration that are fully compatible with the historical, cultural, and climatic context of the complex, and can sustainably meet the needs of the city of Isfahan, particularly in the areas of culture, art, and welfare. Sustainability components for the regeneration of the Risbaf factory are defined in four sub-categories: social sustainability, cultural sustainability, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability. Based on these components, the functional areas and architectural layout for the entire complex were determined, including how to allocate spaces and structure the architectural body. Furthermore, the buildings and structures in the Risbaf factory hold significant architectural value, to the extent that these buildings alone could serve as an architectural museum without the need for additional display elements. To preserve the identity and sense of place, efforts should be made to retain parts of various spaces in their original condition, serving as works of art that revive and evoke the history and memories of the people who once worked there. Consequently, in the proposed plan, certain areas within the sheds, as well as sections with deteriorated roofs or walls, will be preserved while ensuring safety measures are in place. Additionally, the devices, tools, and furniture from the same era found within these spaces can be utilized to furnish and arrange them. Consequently, while offering visitors a novel spatial experience, we aim to transport them back in time, providing a glimpse of life over 50 years ago. Given that the background of this complex is related to the fiber spinning and weaving factory, it was attempted to incorporate structures, elements, and materials produced by fibers such as yarn, cloth, and other textiles in the design of many spaces (including the interior design of museums and galleries). This approach aims to evoke the historical identity of the Risbaf factory and create a memorable experience for visitors.
