Paris Pavilion – The Art Of Peace

When people talk about peace, they may not be able to provide a comprehensive definition of peace. Particularly, every individual has a certain understanding of peace based on the culture and society they are raised in. However, many people in different societies with different cultures share similar perceptions of peace. Perceptions that people sometimes use in order to define the concept of peace namely, smile, joy, being together, communication, interaction and so forth, which in a sense is the essence of peace that comes to realization. This shared understanding primarily forms within each individual and then, it is shared with the public through a movement. Therefore, Peace is a trend from inside to outside or from individual to public (ITP); a movement that all individuals of a society are contributing to. Each individual can play a significant role in shaping the global peace movement by taking a small step, a smile, a connection, and so forth. Although, such a movement may not seem as influential in the beginning, it can indeed play a major role in the bigger picture. One of the prominent examples can be seen in the events after the terror attacks in Paris (2015). In a movement, all people from around the world changed their profile pictures and added a French flag filter that in turn could make a vast and powerful impact on the social media. A small action started from individuals, yet led to a global movement. Another example of these movements can be seen in all anti-terrorist, anti-war, anti-violence protests, where all individuals are holding posters with different mottos but all using the term “we” all throughout. In fact, each individual sees himself as a part of the social identity and fabric of that society and attempts to participate in resolving the global conflicts and challenges, again showcasing an individual to public movement. Therefore, the main concept for designing Paris Peace Pavilion is based on Movement from Individual to Public (ITP) and from intrinsic peace to extrinsic peace. This, a grid comprising of vertical elements is designed, which represents movement of people from different places on site into the pavilion. This will help providing the spatial organization and public unification, which will eventually create peace in the central part. All exhibitors will pass through the vertical elements, watch peace images and write their understanding of the concept of peace. Then, they walk towards the center of the pavilion, where they can walk up the ramps. This is the ITP trend that flow through the pavilion and once people arrive on top of the pavilion, the only thing they see is each other and the surrounding, nothing else. Peace happens on top of the Pavilion where people talk, laugh, enjoy, unite, and stay together.
