About Me
Mohsen Kafaei is a practicing architect, multidisciplinary researcher, and educator. He obtained his PhD in architecture from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. As a researcher, he investigates the interactions between built environments and humans, focusing on how built environments affect human emotions. Through this, he seeks to promote a paradigm shift towards human-centered, multisensory, and efficient spaces to enhance human health, well-being, and quality of life.
During his interdisciplinary doctoral research (Neuroarchitecture), Mohsen investigated the effect of indoor environmental smells on human emotions, perception, and productivity. Through this research, he identified gaps in the field and designed a systematic, standardized methodology with rigorous empirical protocols, employing a mixed-method approach to study how indoor built environment smells affect human emotions. The findings from his research can be applied and further developed in studies related to Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), Indoor air quality, Human factor of indoor environment (thermal comfort, lighting acoustics, and visual comfort, occupant behavior, perceived quality, biometric response), Neuroscience-Driven Architectural Design, Olfactory Architecture, and Design for Health and Well-being. Designing and implementing various phases of the doctoral research experiments provided an opportunity for Mohsen to develop his skills and abilities in the analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) and peripheral data, psychometric tasks, questionnaires and interviews, statistical and technical computations, as well as human research tasks. These abilities and skills have equipped him to design and execute a wide range of complex, interdisciplinary, and innovative research scenarios.
In addition, Mohsen has experience working and collaborating with architectural offices on various projects as an architectural designer, supervisor, and project manager. This experience has provided him with the opportunity to enhance his architectural design skills and tackle challenges and complexities in both design and construction. Additionally, he has served as a lecturer and tutor at different universities for more than four years. Drawing on empirical knowledge gained from his professional work background, he has successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice, integrating theoretical understanding with real-world scenarios. Moreover, over the past years, Mohsen has received several awards through participation in several architectural competitions.
